As I went back into my high school yearbook to find inspiration for this
section, fresh and eager faces looked brashly and confidently at me from
1962, eager to make their mark. As my yearbook quoted. "Beauty, strength,
youth are flowers but fading seen. Duty, honor achievement are roots, and
evergreen." (G. Peele)
I did find the inspiration that I had wanted, but this is a yearbook with
a difference. The faces we'll show here have seen wars and personal tragedies.
They've witnessed the good that life has to offer like the cry of a new
born child, and the bad... like Jonestown, Waco, Oklahoma City, and the
World Trade Center. In another yearbook quotation, St. Augustine sagely
notes, "In doing what we ought we deserve no praise, because it is our duty."
These faces were called and did their duty; for that, even if praise is
not appropriate, thanks are. |
